Short Stack Challenge Week 1

April 28th, 2008 lifesagrind

Week one did not go as swimmingly as I had hoped. Ending the week down $36 after starting on an upswing was a little disheartening.  I did manage to try a few different strategies though and I’m going to work on refining a few things during week 2.

To start with, only play solid starting hands.  When playing short stack you simply don’t have the chips to try anything speculative.  Sure you might get lucky and hit something for a big pot, but if your looking to get lucky with a hand, don’t play it.

Twenty big bets is enough to see a flop for a standard raise but if nothing pans out on the flop you simply don’t have the chips to continue with the hand.

Other players will call your all in with weak holdings.  Try to get all in as soon as possible in the hand.  Preflop is fine but the flop is better.

That’s it, I’ll incorporate these items for this week and see how it goes.

I don’t seem to have much time to write anymore so I’m going to start doing more video updates.  Here is the first one, if you can’t see it in RSS (I’ll try to fix it) then please visit the site.

Short Stack Challenge

April 22nd, 2008 lifesagrind

Ok, so it’s time to have a little purpose to my play.

Here’s the plan:

  • Start with $200 bankroll
  • initial buy-in $10 at .25/.50 NL table
  • Double up and move onto next level
  • pocket any additional winnings beyond doubling of buy-in (ie. buy in for $10 win a hand putting stake at $25.  Pocket $5 and take $20 to the .50/1.00 NL table)
  • continue attempts until doubling up at 5/10 level
  • Settle in at 5/10 and continue playing (or until getting bored or going broke whichever comes first)

If I manage to learn anything along the way I’ll be sure to share it with you.  But as you all know, don’t count on me learning anything.
